BROADCAST TV (Channels 2 - 69)
4 WHP-DT CBS HARRISBURG PA
Allcolated DTV channel for WHP-TV 21.8 WGAL NBC LANCASTER PA
I see this TV station advertised on a lot of road signs in south PA. Came on the air in 1949 on channel 4 as the area's first television station. Moved to channel 8 after a power boost in 1952. In the 50's and 60's WGAL was affiliated with all of the major networks (NBC,CBS, ABC, and now defunct Dumont) and dominated television in central Pennsylvania being the only VHF television station in the area and few people had UHF converters. Later in 1963 WGAL became a full NBC affilate. Today owned by Hearst, which explains why the graphics used during local news looks exactly like Baltimore's WBAL, also owned by Hearst. DTV will be on channel 58.15 WLYH UPN LANCASTER PA
"15" Signed on as WLBR-TV in the mid-50's, left the air, and was resurected as WLYH-TV by Triangle Publications(WFIL-TV 6 in Philly, WFBG-10 in Altoona) in 1957. WLYH was an ABC affilate with local programming outside of primetime. In 1964 WLYH became part of the "Keystone Network," when they became affiliated with CBS and shared programming and advertising with WSBA-TV 43 and WHP-TV 21. That ended when WSBA-TV went independent, but WLYH stayed with CBS up until 1995 when it went UPN. It is owned by SJL communications, but is leased by Clear Channel WHP-TV 21. That explains the cross advertising of the two channels and Clear Channel radio. Here's one UPN station with a 10 o'clock newscast. DTV is on 23. WLYH stands for "Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg."21 WHP CBS HARRISBURG PA
"Eyewitness News 21" WHP-TV was located at channel 55 until 1962. Was an NBC affiate in the 60's but because WGAL-TV 8 was also an NBC affilate and dominated the market, all the NBC programming was either left over or time delayed. When WGAL went full NBC, WHP-TV went full CBS in 1963. Under CBS TV-21 was part of the Keystone Network(see WLYH 15) until sometime in the 70's when they dominated the CBS audience in south-central Pennsylvania and discontented. Owned by Clear Channel. They advertise all their radio stations, and uses the WHP callsign. WHP-TV also controls WLYH-TV 15 (see above). WHP stands for "Harrisburg, Pennsylvania" and the calls are also used on co-owned AM 580.23 WLYH-DT UPN LANCASTER PA
